The Ohio State University is one of four international candidates selected for
The John N. Insall Traveling Fellowship sponsored by The Knee Society. The Knee
Society, based in
Rosemont
,
Illinois
, is a
prestigious society of specialized orthopaedic surgeons formed to advance the
knowledge of the knee joint in health and disease, and promote professional
standards to provide the best care to patients with arthritic disorders of the
knee joint. The Fellows will spend the month of October 2005 visiting
internationally recognized joint replacement and knee surgery centers. The other
Traveling Fellows for 2005 are Jeffrey Chew, MD of Mount Elizabeth Medical
Centre in

P. Bezwada, MD of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore/Rubin Institute,

Christos K. Yiannakopoulos, MD of Veterans Army Hospital in Athens, Greece. Dr.
Berend was also chosen for The Hip Society British Traveling Fellowship for
2004, and spent several weeks this past September visiting select hip surgery
centers in the
United
Kingdom
.
Dr.
Berend, a native of
Columbus
,
Ohio
, and
graduate of
Upper
Arlington
schools, received his bachelor's degree from Florida Southern College. He
completed his medical doctorate and orthopaedic residency at
Duke
University
in
Durham
,
North
Carolina
. While
at Duke, Dr. Berend received numerous awards for his research work including the
International College of Surgeons Research Scholarship in 1994, the American
Orthopaedic Association - Zimmer Annual Travel Resident Research Award in 1998,
the Eastern Orthopaedic Association Resident Research Award in 2000, and the
Clinical Orthopaedic Society Resident/Fellow Research Award in 2001. Dr. Berend
completed a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction of the Hip and Knee at Joint
Implant Surgeons, Inc., and is an attending orthopaedic surgeon with that
practice. Dr. Berend is a member of
The Columbus Medical Association, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons,
The Piedmont Orthopedic Society and The International Society of Arthroscopy,
Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is the Director of the Division
of Adult Reconstruction and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of
Orthopaedics at the
Ohio
State
University
Medical
Center
. His
special interests include less invasive total knee and total hip arthroplasty,
minimally invasive partial knee replacement, rapid recovery protocols for faster
recovery after surgery, and outcome studies. He, along with his wife, Cindy, and
their two daughters, resides in
New
Albany
.
