Mallory, MD at Joint Implant Surgeons in Columbus and the other with Gerard A. Engh, MD at the National Hospital for Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation and the Anderson Orthopaedic Institute in Arlington, Virginia. He joined the practice of Joint Implant Surgeons in 1987 and is now its president.

Dr. Lombardi’s vision for a physician-owned musculoskeletal specialty hospital spurred the development of New Albany Surgical Hospital, which opened in December 2003 and became part of Mount Carmel Health System in January 2007. He served as President of Medical Staff Services (2006-2007) and Chairman of the Department of Surgery (2003-2004).  He currently serves as vice-chairman of the hospital management company. In 2013 he and his partners opened White Fence Surgical Suites, where they are pioneering same day surgery for total joint replacement. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University in the Department of Orthopaedics. He received a Pioneer in Medicine Award from the Central Ohio Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation in 2009. He has authored numerous textbook chapters and over 100 research articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals. In addition to having lectured at hundreds of medical meetings around the world, he annually hosts over a hundred visiting national and international surgeons to observe his surgery and practice.

Dr. Lombardi is a designer of the Maxim Knee System and the Vanguard Knee System, which are used internationally, as well as the AVL Anti-Subluxation Rotating Hinge Knee, the Max-Ti Reconstruction Acetabular Cage System, and most recently, the Signature System in which patient-specific custom guides for performing primary knee arthroplasty are generated from MRI or CT data. He is a reviewer for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The Journal of Arthroplasty, The Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The Knee, The Journal of Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Surgical Technology International, and a member of the Adult-Reconstruction Hip Subcommittee for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and has been an oral examiner since 1997. His many professional memberships include The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), The Hip Society, The Knee Society, The International Society of the Knee, The American Orthopaedic Association, The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, The Orthopaedic and Research Education Foundation, and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Lombardi served as President of The Hip Society and Chair, Subcommittee on Adult Reconstruction Hip for the AAOS in 2011. He is currently a Vice President of The Knee Society. Since 2010 he has been a volunteer surgeon for Operation Walk, traveling with the Mooresville, Indiana, team to Nicaragua and Guatemala to provide orthopaedic care for indigent patients. In January 2011 he initiated Operation Joint Implant at Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital, a charitable program to provide quality orthopaedic care in Central Ohio to the “working poor.” In December 2011, in his capacity as President of the Hip Society, Dr. Lombardi expanded the Operation Joint Implant concept to a nationwide level, rallying his peers to participate in the first Operation Walk USA. Together they have performed hundreds of charitable surgeries throughout the United States. The program continues to grow, and Dr. Lombardi serves as President of its Executive Committee. In recognition of his humanitarian work Dr. Lombardi was conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Ohio Dominican University in 2011. He has been a clinical investigator for several FDA investigational device exemption studies, including a ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty articulation, a compression-loaded hip femoral component, and a rotating-platform total knee component.

His special interests include less-invasive total knee and total hip arthroplasty, minimally invasive partial knee replacement, complex reconstruction, and rapid rehabilitation protocols for faster recovery after surgery.
