The unfortunate consequence of an active lifestyle is the risk of injury.  There are two types of injuries: Acute (Traumatic) Injuries and Chronic (Over-use) Injuries.

If an injury requires you to stop involvement in your sport, you should be evaluated by a physician.  The most common types of injuries are:

What is a sprain?

A sprain is an injury to the ligaments around a joint resulting from a twisting injury.  (ex. ankle sprain)

 
What is a strain?

A strain is a pulling or over-stretch injury to a muscle or tendon.  (ex. hamstring strain, groin pull)

 
What is tendinitis?

Tendinitis is inflammation of the tendon that can occur from a subtle injury or from repetitive use.  (ex. patellar tendonitis)

 
What is bursitis?

The bursa is the slippery tissue that lies between tendons and bones.  The bursa allows the tendons to smoothly move past the rough bone without getting injured.  Bursitis occurs when the bursa gets inflamed from repetitive use.

 
Do all ligament or tendon tears need to be repaired?

No.  Some ligaments, like the MCL and PCL of the knee, can heal without surgery if the injury is not too severe.  However, the ACL of the knee has very little healing potential and needs to be reconstructed in younger patients and any patient who has persistent symptoms of knee instability or slipping.  It is very important to have these injuries evaluated soon after an injury so that appropriate treatment can be started.
