Partial or Unicompartmental Knee ReplacementWhy Joint Replacement?

Americans are living better, living longer and remaining active. With one out of every two seniors suffering from some form of arthritis, the need for pain free mobility and restoration of function becomes a priority. As a result the need for joint replacement continues to grow.

The primary reasons for hip and knee joint replacement surgery are to:

  • Relieve pain
  • Restore function
  • Improve mobility
  • Improve the quality of life

Joint replacement procedures involve resurfacing a painful joint with an artificial implant (prosthesis). Each year there are more than half a million joint replacement procedures performed nationally. At Joint Implant Surgeons, Drs. Lombardi and Berend specialize exclusively in total joint replacement of the hip and knee and perform approximately 2000 of these procedures annually; making them one of the largest practices in the nation dedicated to joint replacement surgery.

There are two forms of joint replacements or arthroplasty:

  • Primary arthroplasty is when the patient is having their joint replacement surgery for the first time.
  • Revision arthroplasty is when there is a problem with the current replacement and some or all of the components have to be replaced.
